Our training courses are designed to make school governance more effective

The role of the school governor

The role of the school governor

As school governors, we play a vital role in the education of children. The day-to-day teaching, management and leadership are, of course, provided by professionals. But the law gives governors responsibility for providing strategic leadership, and governors are accountable to Ofsted and the community for the quality of education provided. Our vision is not only to maintain but also to enhance the high attainment of children in Bury schools.

Working with Primary & Secondary Schools

The Bury Governor Training Group (BGTG) exists to help governors of both primary and secondary schools to fulfil these roles ever more effectively. It provides excellent courses tailored to the needs of governors and led by high-quality trainers. We work in partnership with the Bury Primary and Secondary Collaboratives to ensure that, where appropriate, we can access each others’ training opportunities.

Bury Training & Development Centre

The Bury Governor Training Group (BGTG) works in partnership with the Bury Development and Training Centre (DTC). Courses are provided both at the centre and, increasingly, in schools. On-site courses are delivered in the excellent facilities of the DTC – light, airy, comfortable and fully-equipped with IT, sound and visual equipment. BGTG is controlled by a board consisting of representative governors working in partnership with the Bury DTC.
